The historical development of airplane is considered one of the greatest achievements in human history. It was a success that resulted from years of trials and errors until a successful flight took to the air in 1903 (First In Flight, n.d). After years of trial, a last minute breakthrough had been achieved and human life had been transformed in different ways. It was a myth that had finally come true and had impacted on human life in different ways. To make this myth a reality, there were many tribulations and even it claimed life of some of the pioneers. It was a period when man was determined to try new modes of transport despite the challenges that they were facing. The success of these men was welcomed with joy and surprise but their legacy has lived beyond their success. The invention of the flying machine was not only an expression of human genius and determination but it was also a turning point in history that glorified human achievements. There were many things that impacted by this invention.
Development of airplane was not just by coincidence. It resulted from concerted human efforts that defied the resistance from nature. Those who had committed their life to develop a flying machine would have given up going by the problems they had faced but they were determined to the end. The sweetness of their dreams, efforts, and perseverance could only be attained and inscribed in the successful flights (Combs & Caidin, 1979). They did not worry crashing with their crude machines. They risked their safety and life to bring a new invention to the world.
The development of a successful airplane that could be powered and sustained in flight was not only an achievement of the pioneer’s dream but also a celebration of their achievements.
The invention of airplanes could not have magnified human achievements without putting it into use. This means that if we have to understand how it magnified human achievements, we have to look at the various uses that airplanes has been put into use and how they have impacted on human life. Airplane magnified human determination in changing the transportation system (Hardesty, 2008). It created a great revolution on the way the world travels with new flying machines making it easy to cover large distances over a short period of time. It was an expression on of human conquering distance and space. Today, air transport has become one the most used modes of transport and has increased the ability of people to travel from one continent to another in a matter of hours. Air transport did not only become the fastest mode of transport but it was also considered the safest mode of transport with fewer casualties compared to other modes of transport. In addition, airplane also changed the way wars were fought. From the crude war planes that were used during the First World War, there has been grated advancement and today we have the most lethal war plans like drones which can fly unmanned. In other word, human invention changed the way war were fought and led to establishment of air force. Apart from revolutionizing human transport and wars, airplane also revolutionized commerce. Business no longer needed to wait for months for their goods to be shipped but they could get them in a matter of hours. It has led to growth of tourism sector, flower sector, horticultural, sector, and other which have impacted positively in world economy. Review the three achievements of invention of airplanes it becomes easier to understand human determination was magnified by development of airplanes.
By the start of the 20th century, there had not been any other human being how had ever made a powered aircraft. There had been previous attempts but not breakthrough had been made until the Wright brothers sustained a powered flight for 12 seconds. By the end of the century, millions of people were making flights everyday for various reasons with some even flying through space. From a first flight that lasted for 12 second on 120 feet from the ground carrying only one man, today we have airplanes that can spend hours on flight carrying hundreds of passengers and flying through various heights (Scott, 1995). Considering the difficulties that were encountered first and the revolution it has brought the word in different fronts, there are all reason why airplanes should be considered the best invention in human history. Flight remains an important, stunning, and magnificent achievement of human history. By the end of the 19th century, the notion of taking to the sky had been considered as a definition of impossible. At a time when the world was very religious, people considered that it was not God’s will for human to fly otherwise God would have given men wings. Instead human strive to build wings for themselves. The vision was forever expanded out of impossibility to possibility and human life was changed forever. If the pioneers’ had not cherished in the beauty of their dreams, the world would not have been able to develop airplanes. The invention of airplanes therefore needs to be cherished as a hallmark of human achievements (S, 1985).
