Commercial pilots have always been in demand in India. With many new airline companies coming up, the need for commercial pilots in on the rise. This is a very lucrative career which offers salaries in the range of 1.5 lakhs to 5 lakhs along with other facilities like housing, medical, out-station allowances and free air-tickets to the immediate family and dependents. There are many flight academies in India which help you become a commercial pilot. However, one needs to make sure that he/she is enrolling into a school which is DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) certified. A student has to pass all the exams held by the DGCA in order to get a commercial pilot license. The course approved by the DGCA includes:

Certain qualities are required to be a pilot. One should not suffer from phobia of heights (vertigo), maintain good body co-ordination, ability to keep a cool head in all situations and a quick thinker are some of the qualities that are required in a pilot.

A student has to acquire three licenses in order to be a commercial pilot. These are Student’s Pilot License (SPL), Private Pilot License (PPL) and the Commercial Pilot License (CPL). An aircraft institute school helps a student acquire these licenses.

The SPL if the first stage of the flight training wherein the student is given theoretical knowledge about flying and its various aspects. They need to score at least 75% before moving onto the next stage of  education. The second stage includes 40 hours of flying with trainer and 20 hours of flying alone. In order to get a CPL, one must have at least 250 hours of solo flying experience. The average training period of a commercial pilot after clearing the first two stages is almost a year wherein they need to clear all theoretical and medical tests. The medical tests are conducted by the Central Medical Establishment of the Air Force Unit (CME).

There are almost 23 institutes in India which deal with various aviation training courses. The approximate course fee required to become a commercial pilot including an endorsement to fly a big plane is close to 50 lakhs. Though the course fee is exorbitant, however, one should look into the future.
