Jaisalmer Fortthe monument of architectural delight is among the known forts of India located in the heart of Jaisalmer City, Rajasthan. It is the second oldest Forts in Rajasthanwhich was built by Bhati Rajput ruler Rawal Jaisal in 1156. This magnificent fort is made up of yellow sandstone which disperses golden color shades during daytime which designated it with title of Golden Fort or Sonar Quila. This fort is perched 80 meters high on Trikuta hill and famous for its fortifying wall up to a height of 30 feet. It has 99 bastions which were used as platforms for guns. The Fort is a treasure trove of history which offers great deal of insight into the life of the Great Rajputana dynasties who ruled this fort for centuries. The Jaisalmer fort is a five-storied structure built in a typical Rajasthani style. Based on the architectural pattern this fort is divided into three layer of wall. The outer layer is made up of solid stone blocks and the second layer is in the middle which goes around the fort. The inner wall is the third layer which was used by Rajput warriors to throw boiling water, oil, blocks of rocks on the enemies.
Jaisalmer Fort of Rajasthancan be accessed through four entrances Aksya Pole, Ganesha Pole, Suraj Pol and Hawa Pole. Inside the fort tourists can see number of Raj Mahal (Royal palace), Jain temples, Laxminath temple and several Merchant mansions (Havelis) which are known for exquisite design, decorations and constructions.
The temples inside the fort are basically Jain temples which are dedicated to Jain Tirthankaras Rishabhdevji, Sambhavanathji and Ashthapadi. The architectural pattern of these temples resembles the Dilwara temple in Mount Abu. The statue of Lord Mahavir dominates all these temples.
Sarvottam Vilas, Akhai Vilas, Gaj Mahal, Rang Mahal and Moti Mahal are five exquisite palaces of the Jaisalmer Fort which is famous for stylish design, decorations and construction pattern. Among all five palaces the most famous and most attractive is the Rang Mahal. This palace is renowned for its mural paintings, colorful display of glasswork, artistic interior decorations and beautiful exterior constructions.
The walls and ceilings are also adorned with intricate carvings. It is among the most captivating attractions of this fort which summons large number of tourists during their visit to this fort. This is fort is one of the most sought after attractions of Jaisalmer other than architectural mansion of merchants and desert landscapes.
